TV Audiences

 Mainstream vs Niche

Mainstream - an audience that consumes a product that appeals to a wide range of groups and cultures.

Niche - The audience of a specialist interest media product that may only appeal to a small number of people or those who fall within a specific demographic profile (e.g. age, ethnicity).

The long tail theory - Chris Anderson:

A business strategy where companies get profits from selling low volumes of niche products to many customers, rather than large volumes of popular items to not as many customers. Around 2010. digital sales of music started increasing, whilst revenue coming from physical CD's were dropping. The long tail theory showed that of the millions of tracks available to buy digitally, 80% of them sold no copies. Traditional mass products are being replaced by niche digital products. A greater variety of niche products generates more profit and income for companies. Marketing used to be a 'one size fits all' - blockbusters (action for all men, romance for all women). There are now many niche products, and the long tail theory exposes that as so many products are now available to audiences. Audiences are no longer satisfied by products that appeal to everyone. Shops (retail) have limited shelf space but online retailers (Amazon, iTunes, Netflix) can stock virtually anything. A physical shop is much more likely to stock hits (blockbusters, top 10 chart songs) whereas Amazon and iTunes can stock everything. Therefore, the millions of niche sales created outnumber the sales of the hits.

The age group 25-34 are the biggest demographic for watching on the TV for Love Island. This is because this demographic is still quite young and more likely to have a TV in their own home - allowing them more freedom to watch Love Island on whichever device they want.
The age group 4-15 are the highest demographic for using a tablet comapred to TV and PC. This is because in todays generation kids are mostly given tablets at a younger age to play games, watch videos and work on. This gives them their own device they can watch Love Island on if more complicated devices e.g. the tv are unreachable.

There is a constant for increased amount of viewership for all ethnicities from 2014 to 2019 due to increased immigration and total population of ethnic minorities.
The biggest amount of viewership in 2019 is from black caribbean and mixed/white caribbean ethnicities comapared to 2014 where the biggest viewership was from all other backgrounds. This could be because the population of caribbean ethnicities has increased in the UK since 2014 meaning more viewers are from this heritage.

Demographics - in which media producers study the breakdown of their target audiences based on varibles in age, ethnicity, gender, economic status/class, level of education, hobbies and interests, and lifestyle choices.
